Bowling for Columbine Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

MoviesI saw Bowling for Columbine with Dave last night. Man what an eye opener.

I won't go into too much detail. Steve wrote a good review with details of the show. My thoghts were just as strong.

It was really nice to see an issue directed with a strong intellect. I like Moore's movies. This time he does a great job of addressing the issue of gun violence in america, without a preconception of what the solution is.

I learned a bunch, with this movie. I always enjoy a good documentary where I learn a lot about a topic. There is too much opinion in documentaries, and Moore is guilty of that. This movie removed a bunch of opinion and let the viewer find their own conclusion.

    Great movie! A+.

arloNothing kicks me in the ass more than insomnia. It seems like twice a year I suffer from this. I would much rather have the flu than not have the ability to easily fall asleep.

It always creeps up on me. One night something will happen and I'll not get a good nights sleep. This week it was a night when Sonja couldn't fall asleep. Next thing I know, a tired night the next night, and I can't fall into a deep sleep. The same will happen for 3 or 4 nights in a row. By the 4th day, I am a wreck.

One good thing about not being able to sleep is that I sit up in the middle of the night thinking of good ideas. Well, all my good ideas went to my clients. Hopefully they will be happy with my creative 3:30 AM ideas.

Last night I got a good night's sleep, after 2 days of heavy work-outs at the gym. I swam for an hour and road the exercize bike for 45 min. If I can't sleep I might as well get my body back in shape. Not sure if that is a good idea, however it seemed to work. I got a good nights sleep.

I'm still really tired, however we'll see if I can sleep tonight.

Bowling for Columbine is one of the most powerful documentaries I have ever seen. It identifies some of the causes of gun violence, but in the end, it doesn't explore solutions and leaves one afraid, which is ironic.

arloTHE LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING!!

And I don't mean passing SLOWLY!!!

If I see another "Soccer Mom" in an SUV that is way too big for her in the left lane not passing one more time, I'm going to go completely bonkers! WTF! Why do these lame-os need to ruin my commute, because they can't even drive 55 MPH in the friggin fast lane.

I kid you not, I got behind 3, count em, 3 WOMEN, in huge SUV's comming to work this morning. Not one was passing in the left lane. They had plenty of room in front of them, however they decided to just drive 50 MPH in the fast lane. This is just wrong, and something should be done.

I thought of flashing my lights, honking my horn, flipping them off, rammng them with my car, everything. All I could do, is just wait for a time to get in the RIGHT (IE: slow) lane and pass their asses.

THEN, when I pass them and I give them the "cold eye" they don't even see me. GRRRRRR!!! Drivers like this really piss me off, in case you didn't know.

arloThis week I had Monday off for Vet day. I think my company was the only non-government related buisiness to have the day off. One thing for sure, It did make me like the company I work for much more. Digimarc's cool points went up by 50 in my book.

So I have Monday off, and now it is Thursday. Only thing is, it feels like Friday. I can't handle this. First I get an extra short week, and I can't even handle it. Oh how I wish it was Friday. I need a drink.

arloLast night was Japaneese hat day.

A buddy of mine and I went out for some Sushi and then to watch Seven Samurai at the local art-house theater.

I must say seeing this movie with a fellow audience was great. There is a ton of humor in the movie that I didn't pick-up on without others pointing it out with their laghter.

Just goes to show you. You never can know it all.

arloLast night I went to sleep with the Oregon Governor's race still too close to call. In fact the republican moron (who won't even get a link) Mannix was leading. So at around 2 AM I woke up and started to panic.

My Fish, My livelihood, My state, My GOD! I just couldn't handle that idiot being out next governor. Then I tried to calm my mind down by thinking of useless things that, when it comes down to it, don't matter.

Movies! That's the ticket. Then according to Dark Horizons they are going to make a real life Pac Man movie. This is all I need. People starving in Africa, War in Iraq, THE FRIGGING OREGON GOVERNOR'S RACE GOING TO THAT DICK-HEAD! and they are going to spend millions of dollars to make this crap-ass movie.

There is NO WAY this movie could be successful. Then again, if they get 2 million 30-somethings(I can't believe I'm in that category now) to whip-out 15 bucks and sit though 15 min of commercials, they could do it.

Well, to get back to sleep, this wasn't working. I was now thinking of ways to scam people to come to a crapy movie that would cost 0 to make and then make millions.

I needed another calm topic. Fishing! That always works!

Then I kept thinking of the upcoming rainy season, and how all the good summer fishing is finally commit to a close.
    Did I fish enough?
Could I have used a different fly?
Why did all the fish have to die on the fall river this year?

I finally got some sleep after thinking of Charlton Heston saying: "YOU MANIACS! YOU BLEW IT UP! DAMN YOU! GOD DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!! "

    How poetic.

    MoviesHeya folks,

I have been 2 things as of late. First, working my ass off to get the new company web site up. Second, I have been taking advantage of my Netflix account and extra cash and watching a ton of good movies. So now would be a good time to quickly tell you all what I thought about them.

First movie on the list of reviews was Punch Drunk Love. I loved this movie. It really showed the emotional feeling of loving someone, and needing them in your life. Sandler does a great job of showing the power love can give someone. Director Paul Thomas Anderson cinematography was amazing. I really liked this movie, however it was a bit high-brow and I know some of you didn't like it. I urge you all to think what you felt like when you didn't have someone to love or love you, and watch it again.

Second up, was Martin Scorsese's movie The Last Temptation of Christ. Good movie, I wouldn't call it great, however it did show a believable Christ. The part I liked about the movie the most was the Judas character played by Harvey Keitel. Made you rethink the roll Judas played in the death of Christ.

On another note, being raised catholic, I could not see anything that would upset the church. It isn't the first time I have scratched my head of the actions of the church. Just another example on how out of touch they are with the world again.

Last night Sonja and I sat down and watched a fun con artist movie. Nine Queens (Nueve reinas) was a fun movie to watch. It was slow, however the punch was at the end, and isn't that what is supposed to happen in a con movie. Smelling of The Sting this movie doesn't disappoint. Sonja and I had fun thinking of a Hollywood remake, and who would play which character.

This movie is like most non-Hollywood movies, in that it moves at a different pace. I personally like the slower paced movies and think our society needs to slow down a bit and enjoy the smaller details in life. That aside, this movie is well shot, has some great dialogue and a fun storyline.

Kissing Jessica Stein was another surprise. I thought "chick flick" all the way, even though I knew it's lesbian background, ahead of time. Boy was I wrong. This movie is just a well written, and well shot independent movie in the truest since.

Written by the two co-stars, Heather Juergensen and Jennifer Westfeldt this movie has some outstanding dialogue.

Westfeldt plays an excellent comedic character roll, in the tradition of Jack Lemmon. I have never seen a female actress who could pull this off as well as she could. I really enjoyed just listening to her be Jessica in the movie. I can't remember when I enjoyed a female roll in a long time.

I would truly suggest this movie, if you enjoy good dialogue in the independent movie tradition.
